I do think Miles of Aisles is Joni Mitchell’s best record. Her label wanted her to do a greatest hits album, but she was planning a series of live shows with Tom Scott’s LA Express, so she combined the two projects into Miles of AIsles. The result is joyous, jazzy, intriguing, and Joni at her very best. Of note are the interludes between songs where she is tuning her guitar and making small talk with the audience. At one point she compared painting to making music, and she says, “no one ever said to van Gogh, paint A Starry Night again, man. He painted it, that was it.” The whole album makes you feel like you’re right there.
